When most people think of a hero, they think of a tall, muscular, and handsome being
that could do no wrong. However in the Odyssey, and even in real life, not all heroes are so perfect. Odysseus, is often rude, disrespectful, and not always the most attractive male. However he is still a hero. Throughout the poem “The Odyssey”, Odysseus proves that not all heroes are perfect, and that every hero is a little bit human. #First

Throughout Homer’s The Odyssey, Odysseus loses his entire crew to countless hardships that they faced. But whose fault is it that they were put into those situations? At one point in the story, in the giant Cyclops’ cave, Odysseus’ crew begs him to leave but Odysseus commands them to stay which would turn out to be a deadly mistake. Yet another time the crew choses their own path to destruction by eating the sun god’s cattle after being warned not to harm them. Then there was also a time when Odysseus had to choose between two paths that would both lead to demise. In The Odyssey, Odysseus’ crew suffers hardships and death throughout their journey and it’s often argued over whose fault it was.

Do the intelligent always beat the strong? In real life, sometimes they do and sometimes they do not. We see and hear about both sides, the intelligent and the strong, triumphing over the other every day. In the children’s tale about the three pigs, it tells the story of the strong wolf blowing down the weak pigs homes, until he comes to the smartest pig, who builds his house out of brick. In the end it is the clever pig who triumphs over the fierce wolf. We see that throughout history time and time again the strong beat the smart. During the Holocaust many intelligent people died because Hitler and his army were too strong. But in The Odyssey, written by Homer, the intelligent always beat the strong. Those who are clever and cunning always defeat the strong and witless. The intelligent characters in the Odyssey, such as Odysseus and Penelope, triumph over those who use brute force to solve problems, such as the suitors and Polyphemus.

In Homer's epic, The Odyssey, many themes are conveyed as the story of Odysseus continues throughout the poem. Homer delivers very universal themes, such as loyalty is respected, but the epic also provides meaningful themes that are not as recognizable. The Odyssey is very focused on leadership and courage, as it centers on a heros journey. There are many parts in the epic where Homer explains the actions of an admirable leader. In the Odyssey, Odysseus exemplifies the true meaning of being a leader through courage in the face of danger, which is shown by Circe, the Sirens, and the suitors.

Women are commonly looked down on. They are viewed as weak, mean, or unintelligent. People think that women ‘aren’t as good’ as men, but that obviously isn’t true. There are many strong, confident women in our world today, and were many in our past as well. Throughout The Odyssey, written by Homer, Circe, Calypso, and Athena show that women can be just as powerful and clever as men.

The Odyssey, a great epic, tells us the story of Odysseus and his adventures. Its characters, their problems, obstacles and their morals weave their way into our lives as well. The morals and beliefs of the Greeks represented to us through stories incorporate themselves into our mind. I believe the Odyssey to be an allegory, meaning it has two parts of interpretation to it. The obstacles, problems and goals relate to our modern day lives too. It symbolizes the events that occur in our life and how we react to them just as shown in the Odyssey (except on a much smaller scale). Homer’s epic, The Odyssey is not only the story of Odysseus and his trials, but a representation of the obstacles that we ourselves face in our present day lives.

The Odyssey contains many important themes throughout the course of the poem. One of these themes is the importance of bravery to the characters in the book. There are examples in the poem that reinforce this point, including Odysseus, Telemachus, and Achilles. Odysseus, Telemachus, and Achilles are three characters that all gain tremendous respect for their bravery from other characters in the poem. In The Odyssey, respect is brought to those who exemplify bravery in their actions.

The story of Odysseus’ journey home from the fighting in the Trojan War is captured and documented by Homer in The Odyssey. There are countless themes that Homer displays throughout the whole story. Some themes that Homer displays involve hospitality, respect toward the gods, leadership, and selfishness. One theme that The Odyssey demonstrates is that you cannot be selfish when you are on a mission with others.

People take great pride when building a title for themselves. They make sure that they know exactly what they want their repute to be and do whatever possible to achieve that. Once that is managed then all measures must be taken to preserve this new found esteem. One would be surprised by the lengths some would go to if only to retain a desirable reputation especially in the ancient Greek. Some of the most conspicuous examples are found in The Odyssey. In The Odyssey , in order for one to acquire and sustain a valuable reputation, they will not hesitate to extend what they have, deny what they want and risk everything.

The Odyssey is an epic that is thousands of years old and still read today by many. It tells the story of Odysseus and his journey home to his wife Penelope. Throughout the poem, Odysseus has to make a countless number of choices that effect him and his crew. These choices all delay his travel to his hometown of Ithaca. Homer's Odyssey teaches the reader many things like the Greek's idea of hospitality, courage, and leadership. Another major value taught is justice. The tale shows that justice is ruthless and will always come to those who deserve it, like Aegisthus, Odysseus' crew, and the suitors.

As children we are given this superficial idea of a perfect hero. The juvenile phenomenon of saving the world and falling in love while still staying humble and charismatic stays with us forever. There does come a time when one realizes that heroes are almost never perfect and the childlike dream begins to fade. The Odyssey is the perfect example of an imperfect heroic icon.

In Homer's epic poem, The Odyssey, women are portrayed with having the worst intentions and manipulate people into achieving what they want. Calypso, the Sirens and Penelope all trick others into their lies. Women are portrayed as evil in The Odyssey.

Pride in yourself is a good thing to have, but when it turns into over-confidence and brazenness, trouble will follow. Odysseus represents this in Homer's Odyssey when his crew eats the sun god's cattle, when they are escaping Polyphemus, and when he is entrusted with Aeolus' winds. In every one of these instances, Odysseus makes a decision that forces him to face extreme hardship afterwards. Odysseus' behaviour throughout The Odyssey proves that excessive pride can quickly lead to downfall.

In the Odyssey, Odysseus travels home to his wife Penelope on Ithaca. Throughout the epic Odysseus and his crew encounter important situations that could either bring them home or have them be lost forever. In these tight situations Odysseus' crew always makes a wrong decision while Odysseus stays disciplined and survives. In the Odyssey, during important situations Odysseus' crew lacks discipline and is punished, but Odysseus, on the other hand, shows that he is disciplined and is rewarded.

In Homer’s Odyssey people’s reputations are well known. They have earned different levels of respect based on their actions and choices. No one really respects the suitors because they are greedy and have never done anything that would earn them respect, but Odysseus has made many courageous decisions that make him a respected character. In The Odyssey respect is earned by a person’s actions in tough situations.

A hero is defined as “a person who, in the opinion of others, has heroic qualities or has performed a heroic act and is regarded as a model or ideal.” Heroes are supposed to be people to look up to and in the modern day we expect our heroes to be without faults. The main hero of the Odyssey, Odysseus, often is vain, cruel, and selfish, and is still considered a hero. In the Odyssey by Homer, Odysseus doesn’t exemplify the traits of modern day hero, such as leadership, altruism, and compassion.

In Homer’s Epic, The Odyssey, Odysseus struggles to gain strength and hope, to build up confidence, and to try to find his way back to Ithaca. With alluring aspects like the Cyclops, Circe, Calypso, and more, Odysseus strives to fight on and maintains self-assurance along his journey. Demonstrating various themes, Homer displays courage, loyalty, hospitality, and especially perseverance, all mixed into this adventurous Epic. In The Odyssey, while facing obstacles and difficulties, Odysseus must persevere and take risks to succeed and eventually to find his way home.

Giving in to temptation rarely has a good result. When temptation presents itself, it is better to face it with strength and resist its dangerous appeal. Homer’s The Odyssey is full of examples of temptation and the harmful consequences of letting it take over. The general reason for the long and painful journey home was the crew surrendering to temptation multiple times.  However, the resistance of temptation is what eventually reunited Penelope and Odysseus. Odysseus is shown as being tormented by temptation in the case of the Sirens, and if it weren’t for his crew, he would have given in. In The Odyssey, Homer places the characters in situations of extreme temptation, and explores the idea that giving in to it will lead to suffering and resisting it leads to success.

The Odyssey can be seen as a book of "do's and don'ts" for ediquette for guests and hosts. In Greek culture, friendliness and generosity are respected traits in people. Xenia is the Greek term for hospitality towards strangers, as displayed in The Odyssey. Throughout The Odyssey, the various strangers who take in Odysseus and his crew are respected, those who do not care for the men are punished, and the guests who take advantage of the philanthropic hosts are killed.
