The article you read appeared in the Strath Haven High School paper about 3 months after the terrorist attack on September 11th.  The student expresses his opinion about a banner that was put up in the hallway that read "God Bless America."

Do you agree with the writer?  Why or why not?  Your answer should be at least 4 sentences long.

i think the school should have that GOD BLESS AMERICA collage sign on because it was a tragic moment and people are just trying to make others feel better. even though the church and government are seperate it makes others feel better. some people dont believe in god but i dont think it takes to much to not look at it they can just turn around if they hate it. but the title god bless america just means that gods looking out for us in our time of need.

To be completely honest I think Dan billings is making a huge deal of nothing. If something says god bless America it is not at all saying that if u don't believe in religion your wrong, all it is is a saying. It's not like by that phrase they're shoving religion in your face and saying "if u don't believe in god ur less then me!" not in the least. Most of these references about god by the government are from americas super religious past. So if schools change phrases like "in god we trust" its more being un patriotic then un religious.

I think that they shouldn't have put the sign up because since they used the word god in it, they in a way made it religious. Everyone has different views on religion. So to some people it might seem offensive. But to others it might seem comforting.

I think that they should not have put the banner up. Religion is really important to some people, and if it isn't expressed how they want it, the situation could turn into a problem. The banner could be offending people and what they believe in. The banner was for a very very good reason, but because of the word choice used in the banner, it could offend some people's religion. The banner would not personaly affect me, I believe that anyone can express how they feel, but others think differently.

I think they shouldn't have it up because he's right, not all students believe in God/ a God so that might offend them greatly. It's not exactly saying their belief is wrong, but it does make it look like everyone in the school believes in god, which in most cases, is not true. Although the banner was for a good meaning, it still has its ways of hurting students or faculty's feelings. It wouldn't affect me but I still don't want it to affect any of my classmates.

I think it all depends on how you look at it and the way that you take it in. I feel like if the people that put the banner there wanted to express something more than that they have a high reapect for our religion and government then they would have put something way more legit than just a simple "in God we trust." but like i said it all depends because

I didn't agree. The author was clearly biased, and a militant aetheist type, he can't just let people be he must bother them. His points may have made more sense in another context, but the banner most certainly had its place to up the morals. he also said that it was a big problem, the number of people who cared was probably minimal.

The "god bless America" is quite controversial in my opinion. Although i'm mostly in the middle about this, i feel that he is kinda right. In my opinion, the school seem to rub god into everyones face, christian or not.Not only that it seems to promote christianity.

p.s. Honesty i feel like when you say god bless us it seems to make people not try and fix it them selves, thinking god will do it.

p.s.s also in my opinion religion is kinda dumb, especial quarrels like this, because more wars have started because of religion than most other things, they could be caused by silly things such as this

The saying "God Bless America" is just a simple phrase to me. I simply do not agree to the author. I understand what his point of view was, but he seemed to make a big deal about it. "God Bless" might seem somehow offending, and unfair to some. But it is practically saying to keep this country safe. I see no harm in it. The saying can be used in many religions.
Mostly, the author seems to be overreacting. I simply would have to say that he probably can ignore it.

I agree with this author for many reasons. First of all, all American citizens have freedom of religion, religion is our right, and the government can’t say what you have to believe. By saying "God bless America” you get the indication the government is leaning towards one belief rather that another, it feels like there saying, "you are wrong if you don’t believe in god because god blesses and loves America." The majority of Americans are Christians who do believe in God, but it doesn't mean we can’t think of everyone else. I mostly agree with the author about religious freedom.

I agree with him. Not all people believe in god. The banner could really offend some people and possibly pressure them into believing in god. Even though it may be comforting to some people, it is offending to others, and its not right to offend your classmates by putting up a banner. They should have written something else that wasn't religious so then everybody could feel comforted.
